Good professional writing is about being clearer, more concise, and more compelling. Learn the essential skills and strategies behind successful professional and business writing.
Effective writing is clear, concise, and compelling – for the reader – yet few knowledge workers are trained to write in this manner. This one-day course teaches the essential skills and strategies for effective writing in commercial, public, and non-profit work environments.
Who should attend:
Anyone who lacks confidence about their writing skills, or who wishes to write more efficiently and effectively. This course is relevant for anyone who writes as part of their job – from trainee to chief executive – and particularly for those who write as part of a team.
To gain a clear and confident understanding of:
- the overall purpose of communication
- the principles of successful communication, persuasion, and plain language
- optimal writing process and the necessity for a clear brief
- the impact of the style, words, and punctuation you choose
Learn how to:
- deliver value through every type of business writing
- save time by producing clear briefs and organised outlines before drafting
- logically structure any document
- confidently choose your headings
- avoid overwriting and common grammar and punctuation errors
The morning session is focussed on pre-drafting and being clear about why you should communicate, when you should choose the written medium, and what process you should follow to ensure your writing is worthwhile. The afternoon session is focussed on the skills and steps required to confidently draft an effective document. Working from an organised outline that meets a clear brief, you will learn how to make good information design decisions and how to write clearly and accurately. The course ends with tips and techniques you can work on to elevate your writing from competent to excellent.
This one-day course is designed to achieve two key outcomes: to introduce you to the ingredients for effective writing; and to provide you with a confident understanding of which ingredients you personally need to work on to elevate your writing skills. Accordingly, the course employs a seminar format interspersed with exercises and group discussions. To help you to maintain and expand on the knowledge you gain on the day, you will receive a copy of the new (2020) edition of Simon Hertnon’s popular writing guidebook, Clear, Concise, Compelling: How to write less and achieve more.
